LQ1206-02: Harassment Policy Research Resolution
WHEREAS, since the passage and debate on the marriage amendment UW campuses have seen increases in physical and verbal harassment based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, and
WHEREAS, this is detrimental to students who identify as, are perceived to be, and are allies to the LGBTQ community and their rights as students to access higher education in a safe campus environment, and
WHEREAS, harassment is under-reported, and
WHEREAS, there is no official protocol for dealing with harassment based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, and
WHEREAS, currently harassment based on sexual orientation falls under the category of "sexual harassment" and we have yet to see what category gender identity will fall under, and
WHEREAS, this often leads to unclear protocol and responses when dealing with harassment based on these three categories, and
WHEREAS, students deserve to have a clear process that specifically deals with sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, and
WHEREAS, this protocol should be clear, accessible, and timely,
BE IT RESOLVED, that anyone who is willing to at the December 2006 General Assembly write a letter demanding such a protocol that will be sent to their Chancellor, Dean of Students, and the Board of Regents, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the University Affairs and LGBTQ Issues directors research alternatives to the current response and protocol within the UW System, and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, the two directors work with the Board of Regents and the UW System to create a new, clear protocol for responding to harassment based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
