LQ0607-01: Resolution to lobby the Board of Regents for system-wide gender-neutral restroom facility policy

WHEREAS, both the United Council of University of Wisconsin Students and the University of Wisconsin system include gender identity and expression in governing policy documents regarding non-discrimination; and

WHEREAS, failure to provide gender-neutral facilities is an act of discrimination, and results in a hostile campus environment for trans and gender-variant people, real and tangible safety issues for trans and gender-variant people, and the loss of students, faculty, and staff, all of which hurts the UW community as a whole; and

WHEREAS, the United Council of UW Students has instituted a policy requiring member campuses to include gender-neutral restroom facilities in all new campus buildings, and all buildings slated to undergo major renovation in the future; and

WHEREAS, there is, however, no standard policy for the provision of gender-neutral restroom facilities for non-UC member UW campuses; and

WHEREAS, the United Council of UW Students is dedicated to protecting, bettering, and furthering the rights and access to education for all UW students, not just students on United Council member campuses; therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, that the LGBTQ Issues and University Affairs directors of the United Council of UW Students lobby the Board of Regents for a standard, system-wide policy requiring all UW campuses to include gender-neutral restrooms in all new campus buildings, and all campus buildings slated to undergo major renovation in the future.
