LQ0407-01: Resolution establishing policy regarding non-gendered restroom facilities
WHEREAS, United Council of University of Wisconsin Students has a commitment to supporting all members of the University of Wisconsin community; and
WHEREAS, United Council of UW Students is dedicated to expanding access to higher education, improving campus climate, and ending harassment for all students; and
WHEREAS, both United Council of UW Students and the UW system include gender identity and expression in governing policy documents regarding non-discrimination; and
WHEREAS, the UW system includes trans and gender-variant students, faculty, and staff; and
WHEREAS, system-wide, little concession is made for the needs of trans and gender-variant students, faculty, and staff, in terms of policy regarding accessibility of gender-neutral facilities on campuses; and
WHEREAS, failure to provide gender-neutral facilities is an act of discrimination, and results in a hostile campus environment for trans and gender-variant people, real and tangible safety issues for trans and gender-variant people, and the loss of students, faculty, and staff, all of which hurts the UW community as a whole; therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that the LGBTQ Issues director of the United Council compile and make available resources for campus LGBTQ organizations, and related organizations, regarding methods for educating the campus population on trans and gender-variant people and the rationale behind the existence/need for gender-neutral facilities.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that a policy be adopted requiring all new buildings in the UW system – and all future buildings slated to undergo major renovation – to include gender neutral restroom facilities; and therefore
